How to check your Codex usage

Find your remaining allowance, understand unexpected usage, and choose the right next step without guessing your quota.

Your account is the source of truth for your own allowance. This site cannot read or reset your Codex usage.

Start with the account dashboard

Open the Codex usage dashboard while signed in to the account or workspace you actually use. OpenAI also documents /status during an active Codex CLI session. Check the allowance named in the limit notice, any remaining credits, and the reset time displayed. Different allowances can have different conditions; one remaining balance does not prove that every feature is available.

Codex Limits tracks public announcements. It cannot see your remaining allowance, credit balance, eligibility, or private reset schedule. A public reset announcement is useful context, not a replacement for the account dashboard.

Why similar tasks use different amounts

OpenAI says usage depends on the model, task complexity, context, reasoning, tools, speed settings, and where work runs. Message counts are therefore not a dependable personal budget. A short prompt can start a long investigation; a larger prompt can describe a tightly bounded change.

Local messages and cloud chats share plan usage. Other eligible agentic features can also share the allowance, including ChatGPT Work. Do not assume that closing the Codex window proves nothing else is consuming that pool. Review your active work and the current documentation.

  • Give the agent a clear outcome and stopping point.
  • Limit source files and background context to what the task needs.
  • Use a smaller available model when the task does not require the most capable one.

When the balance looks wrong

Refresh the Usage page and verify the account or workspace before drawing conclusions. Compare the exact notice with available options: waiting, an eligible banked reset, credits, or another account-specific offer. These options are not interchangeable and some cost money.

If the discrepancy persists, send OpenAI Support the affected limit, displayed reset time, client, model, and incident date with time zone. Include a screenshot with secrets and unrelated personal information removed. API-key usage is billed and limited separately; check the API platform rather than this subscription dashboard for that usage.
