Plus, Pro 5×, and Pro 20×
The individual plan choices are not just Plus and Pro. OpenAI describes Pro 5× ($100/month) and Pro 20× ($200/month) as two Pro tiers with the same core capabilities and different usage allowances: 5× and 20× the Plus allowance respectively. These are plan-level comparisons, not a guaranteed number of tokens, messages, or hours for every task.
As reviewed on September 13, 2026, OpenAI has temporarily paused new sign-ups and upgrades to Pro 20×. Existing Pro 20× subscriptions continue to renew, and Pro 5× remains available. Check the official Pro tiers page for changes before deciding.
In My usage, choosing a plan labels your own local workspace. It does not connect your account, multiply your saved percentages, or invent a fixed quota. Log the remaining percentage and exact reset time actually shown in your account.
Compare the workload, not a message promise
OpenAI’s pricing page is the source of truth for currently advertised Codex plans, included surfaces, models, and usage options. This guide deliberately avoids a fixed price table or universal message quota. Offers change, account eligibility varies, and published message ranges are estimates rather than guaranteed task counts.
Start with representative work: small edits, long debugging sessions, cloud tasks, code reviews, or automation. OpenAI says task complexity, context, model choice, reasoning, tools, and speed settings affect usage. A higher plan may provide more capacity without making every kind of work unlimited. Compare what your actual workflows consume.
Check the account and workspace details
An individual subscription and a managed workspace can have different access, billing, and administrative controls. Enterprise and education arrangements may use contractual or flexible credit pricing. Feature availability also depends on the surface and workspace settings, not simply the name of the plan. Use the official feature table and ask your workspace administrator where necessary.
Before upgrading, inspect which allowance is running out and whether other eligible agentic features share it. A more expensive plan is not the only possible response. Tighter task scope or a smaller available model may reduce consumption, while credits can support extra usage where offered.
Credits, resets, and API billing are different purchases
Credits are a separate balance for supported usage after included limits. A banked reset is a promotional benefit saved for later. An eligible purchased instant reset applies immediately, moves the weekly schedule, and is not an extra credit balance. Review availability, price, and refund terms shown for your own account before buying.
API-key Codex usage follows API pricing rather than the ChatGPT subscription allowance. It can be appropriate for supported automation, but it brings separate billing, model access, and rate limits. Do not assume that an existing subscription pays those charges.
