Is Codex down right now?

Most failures fall into three groups: an OpenAI outage (check the services above), a reached usage limit (Codex tells you when you can try again), or a local problem such as sign-in, network, or an outdated CLI or extension. If every service above is operational, sign in again, update Codex, and check your connection.

It is a general error message. If many people see it at the same time, check the services above for an outage. If everything is operational, the cause is more likely your session, network, or local setup, and signing in again or updating Codex may help.

If Codex says you have reached your usage limit or tells you when you can try again, that is your plan’s allowance, not an outage. It refreshes on its own schedule. Connection errors, timeouts, or server errors while a service above shows a problem usually mean an outage.

Follow the incident updates on OpenAI’s status page and retry after the affected service returns to operational. Incidents often affect specific surfaces, so another surface, such as the CLI instead of Codex Web, may still work.

Not automatically. OpenAI has sometimes reset Codex limits after a disruption and announced it publicly. The reset history lists past announcements with their sources.
